Congrats! Pack Your Bags, You’re Coming to NEW YORK!
So, today is the day. I know, I know, it took us a while, but isn’t it better to know that we’ve taken our time and care with each and every one of your submissions?! The Engine Room team reviewed THOUSANDS of portfolio pieces, so the decision making was obviously difficult. But here is the final list.
I can’t wait to meet you all!

Okay, so if you’ve made the list, BREATHE, RELAX, it’s going to be all good. I only have one piece of advice: ENJOY, cause you’ll never have another experience like this. In the end, the money will come and go…the show will come and go…but your experience and the contacts you make will be the only real, lasting reward.
And if you haven’t made the list, BREATHE, RELAX, it’s going to be all good. I only ask one thing of you, please continue to support your fellow artists. After a few moments of Haterade, (we’re not saints), get back into the warm fold and give these guys your love, support and advice! They will need it.
Soon the mtvEngineRoom.com site will have more info the team members and a snippet of their work. I’ll let you know when that goes up.
But remember, we’re all still in this together. We got the upcoming weekly audience prize of an HP Laptop to go with the high of being featured as a highlighted portfolio. More importantly, we’ve got each other!
So, the battle for glory continues, every notch on the belt is one more notch of achievement and an opportunity you didn’t have before. And as I’ve said, new ideas are in the works as well.
I have no doubt I will be working with a lot of you guys in the future. Be kind to me when you cross my path, I am but a lowly messenger.
Love you all and Good LUCK to the contestants!!!!!!
Xoxo

To be honest, I am kind of glad I wasnt selected. I have been thinking about how long its been since I worked on a PC and my little mac fingers shivered in fear.

Why wasn’t there a team Africa?
July 16th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
I was wondering that very same thing.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Congrats to EVERYONE!!!!! I just check my email and I received my rej letter last night
but getting the first letter a few weeks ago was amazing!!!!!
Not making it is actually a good thing, I was just sitting back and enjoying things but now I am experiencing a burst or creativity and all I want to do now is work my butt off too better myself!!!!
I am super excited for the show to be on, its going to be AMAZING!!!!! This is the time for the Digital Crew to shine in the spot light!!!!!
Best of luck to everyone!

July 16th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
god damn it, now i need to find a real job! so matt synman is the 3d artist that beat me ay? Credit where credits due… his works better than mine… for now! Also… amongst some others from the blog I did think allison had a pretty good chance, awesome illustration and pretty easy on the eye for a self proclaimed computer nerd. Its been a good day all round Id say, I a little hyped for some reason… could be the fact ive just finished a 9 hour shift n im a little wired but if anything this makes me more determioned to get where i want to be.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
I have to give props where they are due: I think it’s obscene that Guy Adam Ailion wasn’t picked. He has some really strong pieces in his portfolio, he’s young, he’s in school, he’s very good at multiple artistic endeavors…besides that he’s charming and good looking, I don’t know the guy, but man, what a waste not to pick him.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
I agree!!
July 16th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
p.s. - You spelled “anonymous” wrong.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Yeah joel, i thought guys submission was pretty strong too. Not everyones gonna be happy with the choices though, even mtv wouldve had to compromise in some way. I like the saying “a camel is a horse designed by comittee.” On a side note, http://www.jonathanyuen.com/main.html is pretty cool. very “zen”
July 16th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
I use a hp and its done me fine! lol! but to be fair I won it a few years ago
July 16th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Yeah are there links to any more of the winners?
Jonathan won an FWA a couple years ago I think…that site is really nice. No complaints from me there.
July 16th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
nah, ive just been googling their names, most seem to have their own sites found most of them apart from the other asia pacific folks
July 16th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
i like a focus on talent
July 16th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
slimane aniss - http://www.slimotion.com/
some pretty cool work on there
July 16th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I found basically everyone and have been trying to post a big list, and I think it’s cutting my post up? Maybe because it’s got so many links and they’re trying to fight spam?
Here’s a list with links posted elsewhere: http://blog.adamjustkidding.com/post/42491089/mtv-engine-room-contestants-announced
July 16th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Yeah, agreed…some nice stuff. I really hope some of these designers with giant global clients and worldwide recognition can finally get the break they’ve been looking for.
(tongue planted firmly in cheek).
July 16th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
cheers adam, i was gonna attempt the same but then i realised im too lazy for that
July 16th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Thanks for the link Adam!
July 16th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
@tony - well said
July 16th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
G ~ Thanks
July 16th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
SANTOSHHHHHH!!!! Kill it TOAST!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Adam ~ I know I’d be slowed down severely going to a PC. 15 years of Mac use…just slightly.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
haha! my sentiments exactly joel, theres a few up and comers in there but a lot of them seem to have a fair bit of industry experience, its hard not trying to sound bitter with each passing comment
July 16th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Now people true colors start to show…I’m so over this!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Vamos el grupo latino!!! Good Luck ALL!!!!!!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
As long as you know where you save your files to (make a folder on the desktop) then you’ll be OK. PCs are the same nowadays. I’m on a mac, but I have to have a windows machine to test my work. There’s still a really high percentage of people that use IE on Win, so I have to create for that.
You would be surprised how similar they are. The mouse is the same, Photoshop is the same, flash is the same…just a different way of saving things.
Oh, and fonts aren’t the same. You’d get used to it.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
@Adam:
Thanks for that link collection, puts some perspective on things at least…here are my thoughts:
1) Team Asia is super strong. Much stronger, by far than the other three teams. Jonathan Nguyen could beat the other three teams by himself, and that should be intimidating enough, accept that I might even say that about each of the others on his team.
2) Charlotte Cornaton is the kind of good that non-designers think looks messy and amateur, but I have a feeling she’s gonna be fun to watch.
3) Other than Asia, each team has one or two strong people and the rest are weak.
4) There are 3 portfolios in there that just pain suck. I mean, totally and completely lack talent. I won’t name them, because I feel like I would be cutting them down before they have a chance to prove themselves. And because maybe they’re fascinating people or something…
I’m saying Asia will win without effort, then North America, South America, Europe… but the bottom two is a toss up. Sorry Europe…I wanted to be there with you, but I think Charlotte is gonna carry you and it won’t be enough…prove me wrong!!
Thoughts?
(If I can’t be in it, I can definitely be the living-room judge. Haha)
July 16th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Jorge ~ Thanks for the PC tips!
I have Vista at home as of recent, so that helps, lol
July 16th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
the fonts gave me trouble, i worked on a mac at school then went home to my pc, and all the fonts changed! You just need to save the fonts as images, which means you can’t alter them any more, but they won’t change. My PC glitches out more than any mac I’ve ever used though, especially when using illustrator, photoshop and In Design at the same time.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
yea and one of those that suck happen to be on the USA TEAM!! WOW shocking and I will say
http://www.geocities.com/hunteachother/main.html
Are ya’ll serious!! this guys art work aint ****!! He must be the sound guy!!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Joel ~ I wonder just how much, personality and attitude ruled over actual skills and presentation as far putting the not so strong into the cast?
Food for thought.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
@ HowTo
You feel better now since you have had a chance to express your feelings?
July 16th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Jonathan Nguyens site blew me away
July 16th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
@Tony:
I also wonder this. The over-all vibe I’m getting is quite artsy as opposed to design-y… maybe they weren’t looking for designers as much as “artists”.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Rey Ortiz looks pretty awesome too
July 16th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Felicitaciones!!! A todos los sud americanos!! Felicitaciones por haber llegado asi de lejos!!! Representen nos mucho en este nuevo reto! Sa bemos que pueden llegar lejos! Les deseo lo mejor en esta su nueva aventura.
PEACE!
David Rojas
July 16th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Alyissnesss ~ Thats one of the problems with MAc and PC foonts. They’re known by different names. Unless you’re used to it, it can be daunting.
.i.e
Papyrus & Ancient Script.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
true Joel, i wonder what the challenges will be like.
logos?
idenities?
product packaging?
July 16th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Tony, you are wise. I think we all agree with you.
I would say that if we all just stop commenting on the the distasteful comments, they will go away. When they are not fueled with debate and opposing remarks, they will stop.
I think your comment is a great place to end this.
jorge
July 16th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
I will defend Max Winston and say that I like his work very much, his stop motion films are wonderfully animated. I think some of you guys are just being very immature about the entire selection process. Quit being babies, this was an art competition when you guys don’t win awards in shows or some people don’t like your work do you whine and complain? Very professional.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
yeah now his site is tight!! thats the best out of all of the teams!!
It is about art and not design!! most of the winners have drawings and sketches with color added to them. They’re not graphics
July 16th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Joel / Alyissnesss ~
I knew we wouldnt figure out the actual criteria they wanted until today. I am surprised, but not really. The term was “Digital Artist” That can encompass many things.
Know way for any of us to know til now.
But the challenges……Definitely looking forward to that.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
digital artist is a broad term, so scanned in art or slightly manipulated photos could go too
July 16th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
A very broad term yes. My submissions were heavily manipulated digital photowork and 1 logotype. All a guessing game. I chose poorly, lol
July 16th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
mine were also digital photowork and i submitted sound and web work!! what i wanna know is who was choosedn for what?
July 16th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Joel ~ Agreed.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Shaleea ~ A good question.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Technically I think the idea of people being chosen for specialties was invented by the bloggers…MTV may never have had that in mind.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
mine were pretty much what you see on my link I just don’t know which ones.
I would considar my stuff more digital art than communication stuff, like logos and packaging, but that’s my major and i think i might have a hard time switching to communication graphics, from my do what i want to do graphics
July 16th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
@Alyissnesss: True, but when I say artsy, I mean ARTSY. To me logos and packaging are fully in the design category. Look at Charlotte’s portfolio…she could be making anything with, or without a client.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
@ joel, i think it was always intended, because the teams should be even, a graphics person a video person and so on. it would be odd if there were 3 video people and one image guy. do the teams seem even?
July 16th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
that link is hella good!! I like that!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
HowToMakeLove ~
I cant believe you just said that.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
@ Tony shut your Norwegian looking a s s up! You knew if the first place your old a ss wasn’t going to make the show! Its for college age students you pervert!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
yeah yeah yeah!! call me what ya want but you cant call me broke!!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Allison is good at Illustration, Dillion is good at video editing and compositing, Chris obviously has a high technical skill for web-design and Max is a fine stop motion animator and film maker who has been highly regarded and award winning. These kids will make a fine team. Seriously what’s the confusion about?
July 16th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Joel / Alyissnesss ~
I think it comes down to this. An artist/Designer, No matter what the discipline, is a creative person. Pull out the stops and do what you come by naturally, no matter what the medium. Throw caution to the wind and just do some art.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
This is giving me a headache.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
HowToMakeLove ~
I’m ignoring your comments now. There’s no point in payng attention to you any longer. I’m too busy making money and having fun.
Best wishes and a good life.
Sincerely.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Now that I think of it…is there a single audio person on any team?
I can’t believe audio is so underrepresented. MTV must be against audio people in general. I knew they would do this. That’s why they are playing less and less music, because they HATE audio people! I’m not saying I am visualist, but I am not afraid to express my beliefs! Music Television!? More like Talking Television!! It should be called TTV!
I kid, I kid.
Shaleea, don’t hurt me…
July 16th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
this competion is gonna be amazing, the first time design is going to be show cased for all to see, the people chosen i think are gonna blow up in the industry
July 16th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
@Jonathan…not so much confusion…just discussion…
July 16th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
lol that was good!! I agree Talk TOO Much TV
July 16th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Haha…I was bracing for impact on that one…
July 16th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I am only here, because I love art and I wanted to get to know other artists. To be honest, I forgot about the competition a long time ago. I want to wish everybody that was chosen good luck, and for those of us that weren’t chosen and really want to work together lets get going on this thing.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Joel ~ MTV hasnt been MTV that way in years. Its depressing. I like the channel, but I remember when it debuted. It was an amazing audio / visual treat. Just as much audio and visual and all music. I love the shows on the channel for the most part, but I miss where MTV came from.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Dee ~ Agreed as well
July 16th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
@ joel~ nah…im a realist and if its real i cant ever be mad at it!!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Hey does anyone know, is there a way to look at the winners portfolio sites if they have one?
July 16th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Tony, I remember what MTV was like too. You’re right, it was more audio and visual.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
@Josh Brock http://blog.adamjustkidding.com/post/42491089/mtv-engine-room-contestants-announced
July 16th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Joel was just pointing out the obvious strengths, not what they are capable of doing
July 16th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
I knew allison would win she just screams MTV contestant for some reason. she seems a little cocky though in her casting reel. she is good.. but a little too cocky. I guess thats how people are in LA.
I am confused about why MTV is choosing people who already have a business and graduated. seems like they are already successful and don’t need help.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
@Adam: I totally agree. The challenges, etc could change everything.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
i hope i win a laptop at least =)
July 16th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Hey wow , whats with all the racism mumbo jumbo ?
@ Adam : can you put up my deviant addy on that list you made ? its [http://fenixdesignlab.deviantart.com] i know that my site runs sluggish on some peoples computers so they can’t enjoy it to its full potential so I uploaded some of my work on deviant art .
also i have a motion design reel at [http://chris.fenixdesignlab.com/fenix_qt.mov] in case people can’t view it on my folio site . enjoy !
July 16th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Thanks Adam!!!!!
July 16th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
A laptop would be nice.
Another thing……a person may have an excellent portfolio, but if they cant work quickly under pressure, that can mean a serious loss. I think it’ll even out in the competitions.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Dee ~ Ignore it. Doesnt mean anything.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
I don’t think it’s worth starting up the old “MTV isn’t what it used to be” argument. I mean, I wasn’t alive when it started, but I’m sure it wasn’t about sweet 16s, underage married couples, and “MTV Presents: Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search for the Next Elle Woods.”
That being said, even teens like myself, who claim to be too cool for that stuff are still paying attention, whether they watch “The Hills” as a guilty pleasure, or are actually secretly really really into that Legally Blonde show (WHYYYY NATALIE?! YOU WERE LEGIT SWEET!!).
Besides, we were all willing to put any of those “MTV? Really?” feelings aside for this competition. Like it, love it, or hate it, MTV, or Viacom, for that matter, is still pretty much a big deal (Did you know that Viacom owned Neopets?! I joined that **** in 2000 and didn’t think for a second it would end up owned by a massive parent company!).
July 16th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Tony, I am definitely ignoring it. lol
July 16th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Yeah ignoring is the best thing!!!!
July 16th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
man while you playing…i am addicted to the hills!! i love that show and wouldn’t stop watching it if you tried to pay me!!
DONT **** WIT LC LIKE DAT DATZ MY BIA!!
I AM A STRONG BELIEVER IN SUCCESS WHETHER BLACK WHIT OR PINK!! AND LC IS THE EMBODIMENT OF WORKING TO GET WHERE YOU WANNA BE!!
July 16th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Adam ~ I dont want MTV to be what it used to be. All things change in culture and society and programming reflects that. I’m all for change, but maybe they could mix it up a little and not just with MTV2 way down on the cable channels. The Engine Room idea was an excellent start. I’d just like to see more change if you will. More evolution……and this was a beginning I think.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Dee ~ Cool.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
i want to see what the loft looks like now, I have always loved the real world houses
July 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
i dont understand why u guys get pleasure out of being mean. it makes no sense to me.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Adam~I dig your site and work!
July 16th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
@Alyissnesss
Thanks for the compliment! I really appreciate it!
July 16th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
so my dear friends, when we will start to collaborate?:))
July 16th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Congrats to all winner artists.
Is anybody see a good graphic designer in this list?
I think this competition is not fair.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Drucifer ~ Lol. Glad you got outdoors and away from the warm glow of the monitor! At least you caught something yeah?
Goran ~ As soon as we can all come together somehow and concentrate on things. Today’s probably asking a bit much, but soon I hope.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Palax ~ That was being discussed a little bit ago. Maybe genuine design wasnt there main goal here. Hard to say.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
I think Mtv should have some way for people who didn’t make it to show off their talents.. there’s waay too many talented people who auditioned. Such a waste to not see their work. Can there be an online version of the show with its own weekly challenges? How about showcasing an “artist of the day” on their website? I’m trying to think constructively here… There’s been too much mudslinging on this forum the last 2 weeks.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
there is going to be a weekly portfolio chosen and u win a laptop, and i think your work is showcased on the show
July 16th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Good Luck for the winners! I hope the better works on show !!! =)
I´m so sad to not going, but thats the life is… i just will follow my way, studying, working, doing my best in all things. I will come back next time =)
I´m sorry about Tony, Denesia and Dark, and to not having any Brazilian (OR GIRL) representing Latin America. The team is not be the same without me!
Kisses 4 all, and i hope we´ll be connect.
Starlight kisses =*****
July 16th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Ivan ~ Supposedly, your gallery will be available on their site as well. when that is, I’m not sure.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Congrats guy!
July 16th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
And… yes! I want a notebook! LoL
July 16th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Congrats guys!
July 16th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Tati ~ So sorry you didnt make it either. The show wouldve done well with you there! Stay involved here!
July 16th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Thanks Tony! We´ll show the real artworks on =p
July 16th, 2008 at 5:06 pm

SPEAKING OF PROJECT COLLABORATION:
I’m working on a 3D animated short, roughly 15-20 minutes in legnth…
I’m shouting out to 3D artists, in particular…
GoTo http://drew.barepixel.com and chose the link “SCRIPT-FINAL” to get
the what’s-what…
For 3D artists… Create any STATIC objects that you hear of in the SCRIPT FINAL and/or Storyboard Panels… Send me an .OBJ and it may appear in my final animation.
I will credit you appropiately, and you can use work on “Bus 10″ in your future resumes/reels, or whatever…
If you’re using AutoDesk’s Maya, feel free to texture too, and you may send .ma or .mb files… If you’re using any other package, please send only .OBJ files (UVs laid-out preferred)….
Thanks for your interest… If any interest, contact me, DREW @
anrshelt@gmail.com
Thanx!!!

Hello,
My name is Jonathan Yuen, a designer from Singapore.
I would like to find out if the “Jonathan Yuen” in the Team Asia Pacific is… “www.jonathanyuen.com”? Because I’ve never enter the competition myself, and I’ve been receiving congratulatory emails on this.
I could have made the mistake if it is another individual sharing the same name.
Thanks for any clarification.
Jonathan
