Favorite Links

Hi Guys! So, I thought it would be great if we could start cataloging and listing your favorite links that you’ve put up on the comment boards. Whether it’s a link to your own work or something that inspires you or you want to let the community know, I want to start scrolling them on the site! Let’s continue to promote each other and other creative artists! I’ve just gone through the past few posts and searched for links….so I’m sure I’ve missed some, please let me know if I have. I think I got most of them though!

  31. Denesia Says:

lol Tony. It’s weird that it wouldn’t let you post them together. Sometimes the blog can be tempermental. lol I like that you and everybody are sharing your favorite links. I hope I am not keeping you from listing anymore links Tony. I was just playing with you. lol I wish I could share some links, but most of my links are related to Photoshop or other stuff. I do remember a website I loved to check out in college. It was a great website, but now they’ve changed it to something not that lively. The website was called surrealism.org. I think they had people that did surrealism by hand and on the computer on there. It was cool to see all these colorful out of this world artworks. I just did a google search to see if there was some other surrealism sites out there and I came across surrealism.co.uk. It looks like they’re doing something similar to what we want to do with our community website. The only problem is that you can’t see what they have been collaborating on.

I like to check for Photoshop brushes on there and I also like looking at the illustrations. They take the simplest subject matter and turn it into a grungy masterpiece. I also like that they paint on newspaper. Why didn’t I think of that? lol

I know I missed the audition deadline for the show but could my portfolio site be linked on here as well? Or better yet, if you have any design positions available (freelance or full-time) I would love to apply! I’ve applied to a couple positions through the MTV JobHunt site but I feel as though going through that just sends my resume to the back burner. Well have a great and productive week everyone! 61. Joel Marsh Says:

I think http://www.thefwa.com is a cruicial link to go through regularly if you design for web or video. Also, http://www.mocoloco.com is good one to stay ahead of the trends in all areas of design and art.

@Will: I disagree with Tony about your site. I felt going through it that the loading of it cause me to become disoriented with each page (your portfolio buttons are at the bottom and are therefore the last to load) Elements of your work were actually pretty decent but the website was the weakest part, and I feel that if I wasn’t bored before going to check out the site in the first place, I don’t know if I would have stayed past the first impression.

  62. Will Conlu Says:

TONY - thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it. It’s going through a redesign though soon. So i’ll post up the new version when it’s done to get everyones critique on it. Have a good one yall!

  65. Tony Campagna Says:

    Will & Joel ~

I guess after being in the industry for so long that my critical eye isnt as critical as it once was and maybe thats a bad thing, but I see past the inconsistencies into what any design is trying to accomplish. I see what the designer / illustrator sees. I see many steps into what something can be and not just the initial impression. I do this with my own work as well. I know that when something is unfinished it’ll be quite a bit different or if not at least more functional when its completed. Initial impressions for me are just that. I know when I like a design or composition and I will agree with Joel, that if something doesnt catch me right away, I may not explore to much further into a site, but I like to give anything a chance. I’m not a web designer but I have designed sites. I’m not a traditional graphic designer but I do it everyday. My illustrations are never traditional in the way something is “supposed” to be constructed. It doesnt matter to me. So, with all due and sincere respect for my younger designing friends, I dont fall back on Design 101 when looking at anything creative. I used to though. I’d quote this and that and alot of it made sense and still does, I’m just not overly concerned or critical….but I always make sure something works and never release anything that doesnt. I just dont.

So Will, yes, the site does need work and I agree with Joel on a few points, so yes, I’d love to see the final when you’re done, but I do like it though. It’s friendly. :)
Joel, I think your work above all I’ve seen from everyone draws me in the most, so maybe that why I pay attention to your every word. You’ve a talent and vision that I like to see in the business. I know I can learn from you. I can admit, that I’m not too old to learn new things. Everything changes and you’ve got an excellent eye.

One thing I want ti impart on those of you in school or just out in the industry for 2 or 3 years. I had an instructor back at AIS by the name of Bill *******. He was then about 76 at the time. See this link:

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/news/local/seattle_history/articles/story6.html

He was an amazing man and had a huge impact on my views of art.
He had a saying that has always stuck with me. “What does look like, look like?”
Basically, this means that there are no set rules. Nothings set in stone. What pleases you pleases you, but learn your trade and learn it well. I take this with me in whatever I do.

    Just me.

  66. Tony Campagna Says:

Cant believe that Bill’s last name was bleeped, lol. His name is Bill C u m m ings :)

    Thanks SuChin, you are Great!!!

  68. Joel Marsh Says:

    @Tony:

Thanks, sincerely. Of course I didn’t mean any disagreements as friction-causing comments, and you knew that…. I think if we were face to face and you had said those things I would at once be eager to share anything you want to know from me and would also lower my eyes to take that compliment, felling humbled and flattered. I don’t feel accomplished enough to be talked about like a guru, but I can accept a compliment as a sign I’m going in the right direction, so thanks.

On the topic of gurus, I thought I would share a note about one that I had, who recently died (he was only 60). My percussion professor, Jim Faraday. He was neither a designer nor a digital anything, but was definitely an artist. A symphonic percussionist himself, and a former student of Ravi Shankar, he taught more about the way to approach a challenge with musicality, - how to cultivate the “holes and spaces” - rather than what to fill them with, and how possibly the most musical thing was to say/play something that let the whole composition shine rather than showcasing a particular element (or yourself). I feel like a lot of my mentality about both music and design stemmed from those teachings. The philosophies common among latin and rock and orchestral are the same, just as whether you’re designing a website, a poster, or an abstract piece of art, everything needs air to breathe, attention to be appreciated, and forethought to be special, and improvisation can be the magic that brings it all together.

  69. Will Conlu Says:

JOEL - Snap. I didn’t even see your comment that was right above my last post haha but thanks for the critique. I’m defintely working on a new design for the site… something more straight to the point and more focused on the work. So i’ll definitely be posting it on here to get another critique. Have a good one yall!

  70. Tony Campagna Says:

Joel ~ Of course I know. I think we have an understanding that way. Namely being able to offer critique and criticism without worrying about backlash or it being flip. I think we have similar demeanors so I’m always good. Compliments are of course sincere.

Ravi Shankar…..wow……no small name there and definitely no small accomplishments. All about the process sometimes as opposed to focusing on the end results only.

You should teach. I think you’d be an excellent teacher.

i think we are going to need a place where we can post our images and still keep in contact without flooding our email boxes. What about a facebook group or a myspace??

  85. Denesia Says:

MySpace sounds good. I am already on there. I am not a big Facebook fan.

  86. Alyissnesss Says:

    we should create a group

  87. Denesia Says:

Yeah, lets go for it. What do you think we should name the group?

  88. Tony Campagna Says:

I’m all for myspace! Thats a great idea! :D

  89. Denesia Says:

    I think it’s a great idea too.

  90. Alyissnesss Says:

hmmm, i guess Engine room I rejects? can we change the name after we decide, or is it a once its saved you cant change it?

  91. Tony Campagna Says:

Well, whatever the name of this little collaboration is I would think. :D

  92. Alyissnesss Says:

    “engine room collaboration group?”

  93. Muhundan Bala Says:

how about just naming the group Creative Elements? thats the logo name right?

  94. Tony Campagna Says:

    Alyissnesss ~ Lol, rejects

Not sure about that. I think on myspace, ounce your url is set its set.

  95. Denesia Says:

That sounds good to me. Everyone will definitely know who we are if we go with that group name. We can change the name after we deicde, but if you use the name in the MySpace address, then that’s there forever.

  96. Alyissnesss Says:

i like creativelements, but i dont know if it is agreed apon

  97. Denesia Says:

We don’t know if we want to go with Coactive Effects, Collective Elements, Coactive Elements, Collective Effects, or what. lol

  98. Denesia Says:

I have to agree with you all. Creative Elements does have a ring to it.

  99. Denesia Says:

I am down with Creative Elements. :)

  100. Denesia Says:

Is that available as a website name? That is what we have to check first. We were scared of naming ourselves soemthing that has already been taken.

  101. Alyissnesss Says:

    creativelements.com has been taken :(

  102. Denesia Says:

There are 4 creative elements websites.

  103. Tony Campagna Says:

I like Creative Elements. Got my vote.

  104. Denesia Says:

Back to the drawing board. lol

  105. Tony Campagna Says:

What is with those other creatives? Dont they know who we are? lol The ER rejects!

  106. Denesia Says:

Coactive Elements and Coactive Effects are free as a bird. CollectiveElements.com is taken, but .net and etc. is open.

  107. Denesia Says:

I know that’s right Tony! lol

  108. Denesia Says:

    CollectiveElements.net is taken too

  109. Denesia Says:

Hold up, everything that has Collective Eleements is taken except for .org

  110. Tony Campagna Says:

    Go with CoActive. Its original.

  111. Denesia Says:

If you all are wondering what website I am using, it is hand dany domaintools.com. lol

  112. Denesia Says:

Everything CoActive has been taken. I would like for MySpace page to be named the same thing as our website, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

  113. Tony Campagna Says:

Jesus there has to be something that isnt taken. Ah the brainstorming…I need more coffee

  114. Denesia Says:

I don’t like coffee, but you can pass me some too. This is hard. lol

  115. Tony Campagna Says:

lol, not a problem! Here is very poorly typed cup of java! :D

Are we leaning more towards Coactive Elements and Coactive Effects now?

  119. Tony Campagna Says:

Of all the choices, CreativeElementsZone fits best.

  120. Tony Campagna Says:

    To me anyway.

  121. Denesia Says:

I got this from the domain name suggestion thingy. ArtEffectsWorld

  122. Denesia Says:

Yeah Tony, that does fit best.

  123. G Says:

Alrighty! Id be happy with coactive elements. I really like davids first logo design, I like the fact that mine was inspired by natalias, then his kinda looks like a mix of both. Im also gonna stop with the mass emails til we can get something better. Just incase i send any to someone who doesnt want it. I must admit its not very practical, im also waiting to hear back from some job applications so id hate for something to get lost in the masses myself. I see ppl are thinking about myspace, thatd be fine or a free blog or something. At least somewhere we can post up pics

  124. Denesia Says:

Okay, lets go with Coactive Elements. If a few people don’t like it and want to object to it, then we’ll make a second MySpace page. We’re going with that Alyissnesss.

  125. Muhundan Bala Says:

    sounds good to me;)

  126. Denesia Says:

Coactive Elements it is! Ha ha ha! (creepy laugh) lol

  127. Tony Campagna Says:

    I like it! :)
