THE BIGGEST BADDEST KEGGER ON EARTH

Well, last night guys, was one helluva party. I went to mtvU’s Woodie Awards for the first year and I’m not sure if I’m flattered or hurt. Hurt that I was never cool enough to be invited before and flattered that I finally made it. I only have one thing to say about last night:

LYKKE LI

Lykke Li performs at 2008 mtvU Woodie Awards

Ok, that’s two words, but you get the drift. I had never heard of her before and I’m a changed woman. She came on stage and created a whole new genre for me—Bridget Bardot Gothic Chic. I’ve seen two other women rock it like she did on stage: Gwen Stefani and Karen Oh from Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I downloaded the album immediately and I’ve become obsessed with it, but I don’t think I would be enjoying her music as much if I hadn’t seen her live. This is an artist. She beats to her own drum and has mastered her image.

So, in honor of Aubrey’s amazing dancing, check out another booty shaker:

Hey SuChin! It’s good you got to go to mtvU’s Woodie Awards. It sounds like you had a good time. I was watching the news earlier today here and they were saying how there were tickets left for the Latin Grammy Awards tonight. This is the first year that Houston is hosting it. I sat back and thought hmmm I should start going to big events like that. So I am going to put that on my to do list for 2009, and if I don’t do it in 2009, then I’ll put it on my 2010 list. lol I am happy you introduced us to Lykke Li. I had never heard of her before. Her sound is very unique. I like it. I like the dancing in the video too. lol I seriously smell a best choreography in a music video nomination. Her song and the video was gviing me flashbacks of the 80s in a good way. The clapping, the drums, and the double bass in the song reminded me of some of the elements in “Rock the Casbah” by The Clash. If you were to slow down “Rock the Casbah,” it would go well with her song. It would make a good mash-up. The people dancing in the video remind me of the dancers in The Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy” video. They had quick robotic stop and start movements. I just looked at The Fine Young Cannibals’ video and two women in the video are doing the same head movement that the two girls in silver in Lykke’s video was doing. The director or choreographer of her video was definitely influenced by The Fine Young Cannibals’ video. It sounds like I am doing six degrees of music videos huh. I have finished my music video analysis now. lol

I just remembered another video with similar choregraphy. You have to check out New Order’s True Faith video. It’s cool finding things that link videos from back then to now.

I just saw the commercial for the notebook design contest on MTV. It looked cool. I would like to enter a design for the contest, but my computer and the Engine Room website have a love/hate relationship. lol

  5. Tony Campagna Says:

SuChin ~ Thanks for that link. Truth be told, I’m partial to female vocalists, always have been. I think I’m a new fan. She’s definitely original. Reminded me of early Fiona Apple a little bit. I’m looking forward to abusing my itunes looking for her now. ;)

Hey SuChin! How was the TRL finale? I saw you on there. I loved seeing all the VJs and MTV News people back on there. I could tell that Kid Rock was having a good ole time. lol The only problem I had with the finale was that they didn’t acknowledge the VJs from MTV Live. I remember that British guy that always looked like he just woke up for the day, Ananda, and a few other people. To me MTV Live was the very first version of TRL. Maybe I’m wrong. Part of me was hoping that *Nsync would have a surprise reunion for one night and have a singing battle on stage with the Backstreet Boys. That’s what The Four Tops and The Temptations use to do. Nobody does that anymore. lol I am going to miss flipping through the stations and not seeing TRL on anymore. I hope that MTV doesn’t fill that time slot with one of those dating shows. I am sorry you all, but those dating shows drive me crazy, but hey I am 30 so what do I know. lol May the TRL electricity live on in whatever show that fills its space! :)

Hey I was just wondering if some fellow designers could give me some feedback on my portfolio site. I have consulted my friends and family but as you all know they usually only give positive feedback. My contact php is down so please email me with comments and criticisms. I would really appreciate it.

oops here is the site http://www.shayesdesigns.com

  12. Tony Campagna Says:

Stephanie ~ Glad to see you on the blog. So sorry its so quiet..but we’re between series atm. :) Anyway…

I love your illustrations. They show thought, depth and understanding of the media you’ve worked in as well as imagination. You’ve got me hooked on that.

In my honest opinion though…most of your print work is a bit generic. I dont mean this in a bad way. You obviously know design and interaction with different elements, lighting, fonts, etc….you know the drill. But I think a bit more imagination would be in order. If you put as much creativity in your print work as you do in your illustrations, you’d be unstoppable.

Again, I mean no offense. I think you’ve an amazing talent and a bright future but you wanted honesty. So I gave it.

I know I’m probably the only person who’ll read this, but I just wanted to say that I hope you all had a great holiday and I wish everyone a happy new year. With any luck, we’ll see a resurrection in this blog.

  18. Greg Oppman AKA OPP Says:

Hey Tony, I am doing great I have been given an opportunity from a local sound studio to do video productions and web design for the bands that record there!
That will keep me busy in the future which is never a bad thing.

I have been also starting to teach myself 3d technical modeling which has been fun so far.

Hope all your future jobs next year will be successful and rewarding.

    Hey Suchin,

You should check out the NBS National Convention on March 24th through the 28th. It is pretty much a convention for digital creatives! It’s b*d A*s to say the least!

    Hey guys,

It’s been a stupid long time since I posted on this blog. Been working away on our 3rd studio album!

I need artwork done for it so I figured this would be a great place to find someone!

We are distributed through Warner Brothers so this could be some great exposure for an artist and yes we are willing to pay….

Contact me at trip@tripthrottle.com if you are interested…

    Cheers!

  22. Tony Campagna Says:

Greg! Hey, so nice to hear of your new found OPPortunity. :D I’m glad to see life is moving along smoothly post ER. Myself, I’m busily working on 3 childrens books and a graphic novel! Hectic, but fun.

I’m finding I miss all the buzz that we all shared a few months back. It was something wasnt it?

SuChin ~ Hope the new year brings you great joy!

  23. Greg Oppman AKA OPP Says:

I enjoyed the buzz, it took me away from the real world which was refreshing. I was researching out side the box thinking techniques to come up with a creative design to submit, wish I had more time since I was working a fifty hour work week then with an internship.

Worth while though to see what was going on through out the industry from all the twenty somethings and of course the Tony characters!

If you have not Tony check out Michael Danziger thesis on Infovis (Information Visualization) it is interesting to see the different perspectives that were taken in to methodically come up with the idea behind infovis.
